This course is intended for physicians, nurses, and other licensed medical care providers who manage patients with tuberculosis or who are at risk for tuberculosis. Topics covered include:
- Epidemiology of TB
- Fundamentals of TB case management
- Completion of care
- TB contact investigation
- The role of the laboratory
- Medical management of TB
- Quality assurance in TB control programs
- Targeted testing for TB
- Treatment of latent TB infection (LTBI)
- Culture community and TB care
- TB transmission – protecting healthcare workers
- Interviewing skills
Course objectives (partial list):
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- describe basic epidemiology tools
- describe several components of the TB case management model
- define “directly observed therapy”
- describe the contact investigation process for the patient with active or suspected TB
- list the three steps of laboratory examination necessary for adequate TB case management
- identify populations more likely to have been recently infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis
- describe the procedures for treatment and follow-up of contacts with latent TB infection of TB disease
- describe at least four basic principles for the medical management of TB cases
- describe the legal requirements for TB case reporting
- list four goals of a quality assurance program
- describe how cultural competency skills can improve patient-provider relationships and promote successful TB control activities
- describe several factors affecting TB transmission
- identify four techniques to improve communication during a TB interview
Course format:
Includes lecture, discussion and case presentations.
Application:
Enrollment is limited and pre-registration is required. The application deadline is August 21, 2009. Applicants will receive a letter indicating whether or not their application is approved a few days after the application deadline. Directions will be included with acceptance letters.
The Francis J. Curry National Tuberculosis Center is designated as a Regional Tuberculosis Training and Medical Consultation Center (RTMCC) via a funded cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
