Tuberculosis Communicable Disease Investigator Intensive

(3-day course)

Cost: There is no fee for this course.

Credit: This training is approved for 17.75 continuing education hours.

This course is intended for novice or experienced communicable disease investigators (CDIs) who conduct tuberculosis (TB) contact investigations. Topics covered include:

  • Nine steps of a TB contact investigation, including:
    • deciding whether to initiate a contact investigation
    • determining the patient’s infectious period
    • interviewing skills
    • conducting field investigations
    • prioritizing, evaluating and conducting follow-up of contacts
    • evaluating contact investigation results
  • Confidentiality and legal/ethical issues of TB control
  • treatment completion strategies
  • Social and cultural competency
  • Infection control

To qualify for the training, participants should already have basic knowledge about TB. As a course prerequisite, all participants will be asked to complete selected chapters in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Interactive Core Curriculum on Tuberculosis online at http://www.cdc.gov/TB/webcourses/CoreCurr/index.htm.

Training format:
Includes presentations, group discussions and small group exercises.

Enrollment:

The Francis J. Curry National Tuberculosis Center is designated as a Regional Tuberculosis Training and Medical Consultation Center (RTMCC) via a funded cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

As a designated Regional Tuberculosis Training and Medical Consultation Center (RTMCC) for the coverage of the western region of the United States, the Francis J. Curry National TB Center (CNTC) is obligated to prioritize learners from within the western region. The western region is comprised of fifteen jurisdictions: Alaska, California (including Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco), Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming and the U.S. Pacific Island Territories.

The Francis J. Curry National Tuberculosis Center is approved as a provider of continuing education by the California State Board of Registered Nurses, Provider Number CEP 12308. This training is approved for 17.75 continuing education hours.
